What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There may be times throughout our lives when we feel that we cannot cope with all that life is throwing at us. At these times it may be helpful to seek counselling or psychotherapy and a chance to talk to someone who is specially trained to listen and to help you make sense of your feelings. Just sharing your problem in a confidential and nonjudgmental environment can help you develop understanding about yourself and can empower you to make important choices and decisions about your life.

Counselling is often sought in times of crisis and offers a safe and supportive space where you can work through your emotions, develop an understanding and acknowledgement to make positive choices which reduce the difficulties/problems you are facing.

Psychotherapy tends to be a much deeper and longer process which is designed to enhance personal and spiritual self-development by considering the effect of past history and relationships on current ways of behaving and relating to others.

Confidentiality and Ethics

As registered members of the UKCP and BACP therapists are bound by and work within these Code of Ethics and Practice. The therapists undertake regular supervision as required by the regulating bodies. All sessions are confidential. Each client is given a written contract, which covers this and other points such as cancellation of sessions.

Getting Started

We have a number of counselling therapists. For further information, please contact The Body Factory on 0208 861 1555 or the psychotherapists who work as "Mind First" - Visit the Mind First website.

During the initial consultation your therapist will begin to explore what is happening for you, what your needs are and what expectations you have of counselling and will take you through the way we work.  Then the therapists will decide whether counselling would be suitable for you and if so book on-going counselling sessions for an agreed specified time. Sessions are usually 50 minutes.

Our Psychotherapists and "Mind First" therapists offer both short and long-term individual and couple counselling.

Continuity is very important in the therapeutic process. In recognition of the commitment that we are making to this process we will always provide a regular time each week that will be held solely for you until the therapy concludes.

Micheline Greenberg - MBACP

Accredited Psychodynamic Counsellor and Psychotherapist

I work with the child within the adult. The work of Freud, Jung and Klein and others explain how our childhood experiences moulds us into the adults we become. We pick up baggage along the way, situations not dealt with satisfactory which leave us with emotional sometimes physical pain and prevent us going forward to live healthy productive lives. Psychodynamic therapy means working with the mind - psych means mind and dynamic means movement - I work with thoughts and emotions in the past, in the present and in the room.

My training was an intense four year course at The Manor House Centre of Counselling Psychotherapy including a Parent Infant Observation Course. This training prepared me to be a therapist and work in the community. Of course my training never finishes I continue attending small courses and workshops to keep me ahead of new research and refresh my knowledge.

I have considerable experience and worked for four years within the Woman's Sector working with women and young children who had suffered domestic abuse, this abuse was physical, emotional, financial or sexual. Also I have experience working within the NHS and spent a number of years working in a large teaching hospital as a psychotherapist, working within the Mental Health Department.

I also volunteer and work as a sessional therapist in a local Counselling Centre, where I have worked for many years and this is on going.

I offer one to one counselling/psychotherapy with adults and also relationship/couple counselling and I abide by the rules laid out by my professional body BACP.

Stefan Walters - UKCP, MBACP

Counsellor and Psychotherapist

Stefan Walters is a counselling psychologist specialising in individual and couples counselling, and family therapy. He has a wealth of experience working with issues such as abusive and dysfunctional relationships, fidelity, sexual addictions, compulsivity, anxiety, depression, and divorce.

Having studied on the prestigious counselling psychology Masters programme at San Diego State University, Stefan is one of the few counsellors in the UK that can offer emotionally focused therapy (EFT). This empirically supported approach has evolved out of emotion and attachment theory, and views emotions as centrally important in our behaviour, teaching us to better identify and make sense of our emotions so that we will be better able to manage our emotional experiences in the future. Stefan also has specialised training in motivational interviewing, gestalt therapy, Bowenian therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy, and is experienced in applying these therapies to a number of issues such as bereavement, anger management, mood disorders, trauma, addictions, anxiety, and depression.

Stefan has an interest in social and restorative justice. He is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and is listed on the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy's (BACP) accredited register; approved by the Department Of Health and Professional Standards Authority. Stefan is also a member of the Association for Family Therapy (AFT) in the UK, a member of the UKCP, and continues to be a registered member of both the Californian and American Associations for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the Restorative Justice Mediation Program in the USA.

Bernice Gorringe - UKCP

Counsellor and Psychotherapist

I am an integrative psychotherapist and work with a relational approach, providing empathy and attentiveness to the client’s experiences of past relationships and events and exploring how they have led to the development of inner conflicts, which impact on the client’s everyday life.

Working relationally also involves working in relationship to the client with the aim of enabling the client to become more self aware and more in touch with their own voice. Part of this process of developing a new a new way of relating to self and others is to attend to the bodily experience of emotions such as depression and anger and to feelings such as anxiety, in order to gain an awareness and understanding of the client’s inner conflicts.

By working closely and attentively from moment to moment in the therapy room it can enable the client to express their own inner voice and become less burdened by conflict.

If you want to to finally start living a life you love and banish those things that have kept you stuck, then it is time to consider coaching, therapy or meditation - or a combination of all three. As a certified and qualified practitioner, I will work with you to utilise a combination of practical coaching, clinical hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and meditation techniques which are powerfully tailored to your specific issues and needs.

How can coaching, meditation and therapy help?

In our sessions I will show you how you don’t need to be at the mercy of your mind. I can help you to change those negative thoughts and build your confidence. I will help you to:

Put the past behind you, where it belongs, spend time in the present moment, discovering the still silent spaciousness that exists beyond your thoughts and design the future you want and help you build it on strong foundations.

Alan Bordeville - MBACP

Selecting a therapist can be a daunting task. Research has consistently shown that the relationship between you and your counsellor is the most important catalyst for change. Searching for someone who is qualified is important, but more importantly it should be someone you feel comfortable with.

I will help you make positive changes in your life through ongoing personal development, creativity and growth. You may be working through challenges in the following areas: career, creative process, health and wellness, relationships, self esteem, stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, transitions. Whatever your particular concerns may be, working through them will allow you to reach your full potential.
